About CSJI

Welcome to Cycle San Juan Islands, a resource for cyclists, big and small, young and old, male and female, families and singles, and just about anyone who shares a love and interest for both bicycling and the beautiful San Juan Islands in Washington State.

It is the hopes that this site will be a resource for cyclists who live, work, and play here.  Plans for the site include:

* Lobbying for safer and better cycling access in all of the the San Juan Islands
* Promoting cycling as a green, healthy and viable alternative to transportation in the islands
* Creating outreach opportunities for the San Juan community and it’s cyclists
* Utilizing Google Maps to list and recommend safe biking routes, popular biking routes and trails
* Lobbying Google to create a “Cycle There” function (similar to “Drive There” and “Walk There”) on the Google Maps site
* Listing and promoting local cycling resources such as bike shops, cycle friendly lodging, tourism, cycling events and their causes, and more
* Creating a site where cyclists can share their San Juan Islands cycling experiences, including recommendations, stories, route plans, gathering events, “get-togethers,” and much, much more!

Both the local and biking communities are invited to share their knowledge in a positive and productive way to create a legacy for one of the best parts of the Pacific Northwest!

We will be vacationing on San Juan Island for 5 days from July 18-25. I am curious about any bike events/rides in the area during that time and also pondering the question of which bike to bring – road or trail. In the research I’ve done, it appears that there are a good number of quality road bike routes available amoung the three major islands, so I am current favoring bringing my road bike. Any feedback would be appreciated.

    thanks,

Many of the good mountain bike trails are closed for the season (for hikers) and so you are right to bring a road bike and also right about good routes. That said much of San Juan roads are chip-seal so be wary about riding of which tires you bring. There are tonnes of great road biking to do on all of the islands though many areas out of the main towns have little to no shoulder but drivers are generally careful.

On San Juan there are tonnes of events going on though not sure at this time if any are bike related (http://www.sanjuancalendar.com/)

    Cheers and welcome!
